Heavy rains in Bulgaria’s Black Sea city of Varna flooded parts of the city on Thursday afternoon. The district of Asparuhovo was hit by a flash flood from the ridge above the area.
According to witnesses, a two-meter wave of water and mud suddenly descended from the ravine and flooded the lower parts of the neighbourhood. One of the national channel reports that many cars, camping trailers and home furniture were freely floating along the streets.
Entire sections of Asparuhovo are swamped in mud and water and unfortunately cannot be reached by rescue teams. Moreover, electricity in the area has been cut off in order to prevent the risk of power failure. Also, any traffic, public transport and all mobile phones in the entire city were disrupted.
The unprecedented floods in the Varna neighbourhood of Asparuhovo claimed 13 lives so far, including two children, but the death toll is expected to rise.
