Politicians, businessmen, top scientists of Bulgaria and members of the diplomatic circles accredited in Sofia have honored with their presence the celebration for 50 years from the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus, which was held today.
In his speech the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus in Sofia H.E. Mr. Stavros Amvrosiou featured the independence of Cyprus as a “brilliant victory of the Cypriot people resulting from a long struggle against the British colonial administration”.
In addition, he reminded about the tragic events in 1974 that followed the coup against president Makarios, which became the motive, as we all know, for Turkey to invade Cyprus, and continued by saying that the Turkish invasion in Cyprus resulted in one third of the Cypriot people becoming refugees as they were thrown out of their houses and their properties and the Turkish troops occupying 37% of the island. Thousands of people were killed and thousands of families are still trying to find out news about their missing relatives who have disappeared and are still missing. “At present Turkey stubbornly refuses to withdraw its troops from Cyprus blatantly ignoring the numerous UN resolutions” the Ambassador added.
The Ambassador also expressed his belief that the President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Demetres Christofias and the whole leadership of Cyprus will continue to work in a constructive manner with determination and flexibility for a fair, permanent and sustainable solution in Cyprus within the framework of direct negotiations and for the interests of Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, the Maroni, Armenians and Latins.
Moreover, His Excellency also referred to the traditional friendly relations between Cyprus and Bulgaria, which was among the first countries that recognized the independence of the Cyprus Republic. Many Cypriots are graduates of universities in Bulgaria and in Cyprus now live and work thirty thousand Bulgarians, according to the Cyprus Ambassador.
Concluding his speech, the Ambassador of Cyprus thanked Mr. Christopher Violaris, Chairman and C.E.O. of ЕUROLINK INVESTMENT GROUP, operating successfully for years on the Bulgarian market with an impressive range of development projects on the Black Sea coast near Varna, whose support made the celebration for the 50th Year Anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus possible.
