15 August – The Assumption of Virgin Mary
The Assumption of Mary is the traditional belief held by Christians of the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and some Protestant churches, that Virgin Mary at the end of her life was physically taken up into heaven.
August 15th is a very important religious public holiday in Cyprus. The feast day of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is celebrated on this day. It is also called the Feast of the Dormition and is a religious holiday celebrating the miracle of Virgin Mary who in bodily form ascended into Heaven after her death. Ceremonies take place throughout the country including at the monastery in the TroodosMountains. The day of the death of the Mother of God is called the Dormition in the Orthodox Church as for her body did not know corruption after death, but together with her soul was taken up into heaven. The foundation for the feast of the Dormition is to be found in a sacred tradition of the Church dating from apostolic times. Assumption is important to many Christians as the Virgin Mary’s heavenly birthday.
August 15th is also celebrated in Varna as the Day of Varna, due to the presence of The Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral, which is the largest and most famous Bulgarian Orthodox cathedral in the Bulgarian Black Sea port city of Varna, and the second largest in Bulgaria (after cathedral Alexander Nevski in Sofia). Officially it opened on 30 August 1886. It is the residence of the bishopric of Varna and Preslav and one of the symbols of Varna.
The programme adopted by Varna city council features a number of events, the climax of which will be the fireworks scheduled for 11.30pm. Before that, the cultural calender invites people to the Summer Theatre in the city’s SeaGarden. For those keen on contemporary Bulgarian music, Varna is presenting a concert at the entrance of the SeaGarden, next to the Festival and Congress Centre.
